Attractive Tourist Places In Spain

What attracts tourists to Spain? The reasons are obvious: fabulous beach resorts, exotic islands, mysterious monuments, relics of the golden Spanish colonial age, wonderful food and drink, and the warm hospitality of the people. For a little taster as to what tourist delights Espãna has to offer check out what we feel are some of the most prominent tourist attractions of the country…
El Museo del Prado Possibly the premier tourist attraction of the capital city of Spain, and houses a wonderful art collection that is not to be missed! The museum contains an outstanding portfolio of works by the Dutch, Spanish, German and Italian Renaissance artists. The Prado is up there with the Louvré in terms of top European Museums.
Since its completion in the last 18th century, The Prado has evolved into a manifestation of the wealth of Spanish art. Today El Museo del Prado holds over 8,000 paintings.  If you are a genuine art lover, give yourself a few days to thoroughly explore the wonderful art collection on offer. The collection features the works of Goya, El Greco, Bosch, Titian, Botticelli and Raphael are all featured prominently at Prado.

The architecture and gardens at The Alhambra are a joy to behold – the foliage merging with the buildings and look out points are based on what was described as paradise in the Koran. The key points to visit are the wonderful Emir Palace, the General Life Gardens and the magnificent Palacio Nazaries. Approximately 2 million visitors a year visit The Alhambra and it is by far the most popular tourist attraction in Spain.

Famous Top 10 Attractive Places in Greece 2

To most tourists, Athens connotes an image of the Acropolis standing above the city with the proud Parthenon beckoning us to explore and sample its three millennia of history.   The Acropolis was dedicated to Athena, its patron goddess.  Although evidence exists that location of the Acropolis has been an important religious site since 4,000 B.C., the view that we have of the site today memorializes Athens in the 5th century B.C., when the extant historic buildings  were erected after earlier buildings were destroyed by the Persians.

The Acropolis (the Sacred Rock) was originally a religious sanctuary restricted to a favored few.  Its buildings were temples honoring the gods important to the Athenians and only the "approved" could enter and worship.
As the power of Athens and Greece faded, the temples were used by invaders for many purposes, few of which involved attempting to preserve the monuments.  You should not expect to be allowed into the interior of any of the monuments, as they are very fragile.  Your exploration will consist of examining the exteriors and unless you have a guide or have joined a tour, you will miss much of the interesting detail and history of the site.

Our Athens map shows all of the important locations on the Acropolis.  (If you have a broadband connection, take a look at the map using the Satellite option (zoom in) to see the details of the Acropolis.)

The Parthenon (5th century B.C. - shown below)), dedicated to Athena (the patron goddess of Athens), is the most interesting monument on the Acropolis and it visually dominates the rock.  Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the temple and it is in a precarious state, although it is being carefully renovated.  The statues  and friezes that originally adorned the Parthenon (known as the Elgin Marbles) were removed at shipped to the British Museum in the early 19th century.  These historical pieces are currently a bone of contention between the Greek and the British governments.

During the occupation of Athens by the Turks, who allowed the British to remove the Elgin Marbles, the Parthenon was used to store gunpowder.  As the result of a bombardment by the Venetians in the 17th century, a cannon ball caused the gunpowder to explode, nearly destroying the entire structure.

The Old Museum of the Acropolis , contained statues and friezes from the site, but has been replaced by the new Acropolis Museum.

The new 150,000 square foot Museum is located just to the south east of the Acropolis and is served by the Athens Metro (head to the Akropoli Station).

Statues and other art from the "old" museum and from the temples on the Acropolis have been transported to the new museum.

Other artifacts from the Acropolis and surrounding areas are stored in Athens's National Archaeological Museum, which is the largest museum in Greece and one of the best archaeological museums in the world.  This noted museum contains impressive collections of prehistoric finds, as well as treasures from the Golden Age of Greece, including sculptures, pottery and bronzes.

The Plaka, sitting below the Acropolis, is a pedestrian only zone that caters to shoppers and features many cafes/restaurants and shopping (mostly mementoes) .  The Plaka's architecture is mixed and not especially old, but this is a fun section of Athens. Consider having a meal at one of the many restaurants on the streets leading to the Plaka.  Meals here can be "touristy", but the fish and seafood are often excellent.

While we are on the subject of food, it is unlikely that you will  find a good seafood meal at the port of Piraeus.  We note this because most cruises depart from Piraeus and manage to lure cruisers in with the thought of a romantic dinner at the harbor.  Our suggestion - skip it!  You will find better meals almost anywhere in Athens.

      The Agora Museum in Athens

The ancient Agora was once the historical core of Athens. It was conquered and destroyed several times and reached its peak around the Second century B.C.  The area was excavated over the past one hundred and fifty years, although archeological digs continue today. The area features several interesting temples (particularly the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos),  various statues and numerous altars.  The Agora Museum, housed in a reconstructed building (a stoa from the agora), is well worth a visit.  The museum's holdings are mainly treasures recovered from the  Agora and provide a glimpse of life in the birthplace of democracy.

If you have time, visit Mt. Lycabettus, the highest spot in Athens.  Take the funicular to the top for a panoramic view of the city.  You can also climb the steps, if you prefer to make it a workout. The hill is topped with a small chapel and a touristy restaurant.

Of course, there is more to do in Athens than we have covered, but you will be sorely pressed to find anyone who would prefer to remain in Athens when they could be exploring the rest of the county, especially the Greek Isles.

Famous Attraction Places In Greece

If you plan to travel in Greece, read the information you need to know about public safety, visas, crime, driving, health care, and more in our section on travel information for Greece:

Home of Socrates, Plato and  famous Greek philosophers, the history of Athens is one of the touchstones of Western Civilization. Once a small village in the shadow of the Acropolis, Athens is a major metropolitan area with a population of over three million. The city spreads from horizon to horizon across a shallow valley that suffers from traffic jams and the air quality is similar to Los Angeles. Leave the driving to professionals (taxis), or take the Metro and walk between attractions when possible.
Tourist Athens is exciting, impressive  and truly memorable.  The  major tourist attractions are historical sites and the most famous of these are  tightly clustered around the Acropolis.

Athens is dominated by the Acropolis, one of the world's most recognizable attractions. Mt. Lycabettus in the background, on the right-center, offers great views of the city.

Summers are very warm and you will find the outdoor attractions more enjoyable if you can see them in the morning.  Of course, the photo-taking is  much better near sunset.  Due to the heat,  the pace of life slows in the mid-afternoon, so consider returning to the hotel for a  snooze.

The BEST of PORTUGAL
These 3 experiences capture the essence of Portugal

THE AGE OF DISCOVERY
All of Portugal recalls the Age of Discovery -- in ornate stonework inspired by India (Batalha Abbey, Convent of Christ, Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower), in marvelous blue and white tile panels evocative of Chinese porcelain, in the gastronomy influenced by the sea and with the flavors of Africa and the Americas, in the art, Indo-Portuguese furniture, and porcelain that decorate the royal palaces and fill Lisbon's museums, and in the fantastic gilt and baroque church interiors made with the gold discovered in Brazil. And gazing into the horizon from dramatic capes (Cabo de São Vicente and Cabo da Roca) is just as inspiring today as when Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, or Magellan stood on the same spots and dreamed of discovering the world.

Attractive Tourist Places In Sweden 2

Tourist attractions in Sweden are numerous but, just like the Swedish people, never obtrusive. Don’t expect a country full of spectacular amusement parks or ancient churches. The country’s main attraction is its landscape. But fans of beautiful scenery are sure to have an unforgettable vacation here.

I made a top-10 of tourist attractions in Sweden. Here are the second five – in alphabetical order:

Bohuslän
Bohuslän is the area at the west-coast of Sweden, roughly located between Gothenburg and the Norwegian border. It is characterized by rocky fragmented islands and small fishing communities. Awesome scenery, and one of the best tourist attractions in Sweden according to the Swedes. Well, they should know.

Göta Canal
One of the most popular attractions in Sweden. Make a cruise from Gothenburg to Stockholm with an old ship, crossing one river, three canals, eight lakes, passing 66 locks and traveling on two seas. The Göta Canal is one of the most pleasant waterways in Sweden and has attracted thousands of people searching relaxation and pleasure. You can choose between 2-, 4- and 6-day cruises. You can order a free brochure for the Göta Canal cruise of your choice from this list.

Inlandsbanan
Or the Inland Railway. Great trip for fans of train journeys, across the Arctic circle. Inlandsbanan runs from Kristinehamn at the side of lake Vänern to the wilderness near Gällivare, Lapland. Distance: around 1300 km, but note that a bus has replaced the train on parts of the most southern track. Mora-Gällivare takes two days with forests, hills, wild rivers and sometimes a village. You can stop there, have lunch and get back on the train. Or spend the night - it’s all up to you. Inlandsbanan runs from June 13 until September 11.

Kungsleden
The most famous hiking trail of Sweden, 500 km long and leading from Abisko (in the north) to Hemavan (south). Well-marked and popular, with cabins along the trail that can be busy in the holiday season. You’ll pass Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain (2,078 m) and see some of Europe’s most beautiful nature with mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, valleys.

Storsjön
Storsjön (the Great Lake in Swedish) is the Nordic Loch Ness. Locals believe there lives a monster in its dark water – and typically Swedish, the monster is even protected by law! The area around Storsjön – 550 km northwest of Stockholm – has a lot to offer too. Östersund is a likable town and has a Skansen-like open-air museum called Jamtli. From there it’s not far to the mountain regions of Jämtland. Great for hiking in summer, perfect for skiing in winter. Not many foreigners here, but still one of the best tourist attractions in Sweden.

Attractive Tourist Places In Sweden

Tourist attractions in Sweden are numerous but, just like the Swedish people, never obtrusive. The country’s main attraction is its landscape. And beautiful sceneries are usually not compatible with busy souvenir shops and restaurants.

So you won’t find many amusement parks or palaces on my list. But I guarantee you’ll have an unforgettable vacation if you visit some (or all) of these spots.

I made a top-10 of tourist attractions in Sweden. Here are the first five – in alphabetical order:

Cities
Stockholm has it all:
unique location, great architecture, historical sights, museums, parks, nightlife, shops – and an archipelago of 24,000 islands just around the corner. If you haven’t seen Stockholm, you haven’t seen Sweden. Göteborg, Malmö and Uppsala are other attractive cities. Also interesting are Karlskrona (town center is a world heritage site), Kristianstad (historical town, boulevards in Parisian style), Lund (university town with famous cathedral) and Kalmar (beautiful location, old town and well-preserved Renaissance palace).

Gotland
Speaking of tourist attractions in Sweden, one wouldn’t expect to think of beaches. But there are beaches in Sweden. Some of the best are found on the Baltic island of Gotland, which is popular among Swedes and attracts thousands of visitors every summer. The pleasant and surprisingly flat landscape is excellent for cycling. The walled medieval Hanseatic town Visby is on the World Heritage List of the Unesco and an attraction on its own.

Lake Siljan
Found in the heart of Dalarna, central Sweden, this lake is the center of folklore and tradition. Dalarna is a popular holiday destination in summer. Thousands of Swedes visit Leksand every year to see the midsummer pole set up. The nearby town of Rättvik is famous for its folk dancing. Also worth a visit is the bear park in Orsa. Or you can just enjoy the beautiful lake Siljan and the hilly fertile land surrounding it.

Mines
Mining has always had a special attraction. Mines make some of the most exciting tourist attractions in Sweden. Three are worth a visit. The copper mine of Falun, Dalarna (now on the World Heritage List), and the iron-ore mines of Kiruna and Gällivare in Lapland. You can book a guided tour and go down yourself.

National Parks
Sweden has dozens of national parks and nature reserves, ideal for long hiking tours. The most impressive scenery is found in Lapland in the North. Most popular is Abisko, a great spot with the famous Lapporten landmark.
Just a little to the south is the spectacular Sarek national park, Europe’s wildest place with dangerous rivers, deep valleys, high mountains and no facilities for tourists. For experienced hikers only! Friendlier but with some incredible scenery too are Padjelanta (home of the reindeer) and Muddus.

Attractive Tourist Spots In Germany 2

The Castles of Fussen
Like most of Europe, several castles are littered throughout Germany. It contains the other two of Ludwig's castles, the first one being the Neuschwanstein castle. This is a must-see for all those families who are travelling through Germany because the place literally looks like it's been torn out of a story book.

Lake Constance

Lake Constance is both a tourist spot and an essential source of life for the Germans. Several areas in the country rely on this very lake for their drinking water, and this large lake is also a great place to swim and to go bird watching. Indeed, if you're one for beautiful natural sceneries, then Lake Constance is not to be ignored.

 The Black Forest

The name looks like it has been taken from one of the fairytales, doesn't it? The Black Forest - it sounds like a place where evil witches reside and cursed trees grow, but don't let that deter you though. If anything, the Black Forest can hardly be related to its name as it's a sunny forest with tall and sturdy firs. It's a great place to go hiking and a great place for picnics.
 Cologne

When you hear the word, Cologne, what comes into your mind? A beautiful fragrance, right? Well, meet the town that's called Cologne for a reason, and indeed, the town of Cologne has its own peculiar fragrance that's very pleasing to the nose. Also, there you will find a beautiful view of the River Rhine and the Cologne Cathedral.
 Dachau

Take a break from the fairytale castles and mystical forests and go to the place called Dachau. Dachau is a concentration camp - a remnant of Germany's dark past where you can just imagine the horrors that took place in this very spot. However, you will also find there a statue bearing the inscription, "Never Again", a solemn promise of the German people that they will 'never again' commit such unspeakable acts - another true victory for peace.

 Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest - technically, it's not a place, but it's just too good a festival to leave out of any 'top ten list' that concerns tourism and Germany. This fun-filled festival in the town of Bavaria is guaranteed to leave you intoxicated and euphoric. You can spend days on end just drinking authentic German Ale and just letting yourself loose.

Driving through the Romantic road would be one of the most pleasant drives you'll experience in your whole life. This road is flanked by scenic landscapes on both sides. Occasionally, you'll pass through a picturesque town, a beautiful gothic church, and sometimes, a quaint countryside inn.

 Augsburg

Passing through the Romantic Road will lead you to Augsburg, a town founded by the Roman Legions and named after the esteemed Roman emperor, Augustus. This picturesque town contains such historical places as St. Anne's Church, the place where Martin Luther took refuge, and Dom, a very unusual Cathedral. You can also find here the Renaissance Golden Room, a sight that will make you squint with its shine.
 Neuschwanstein Castle

Did you know that Walt Disney used a castle found in Germany as his inspiration for the castle of Sleeping Beauty? It's true, those alabaster walls and those high towers and wide parapets were all based on the Neuschwanstein Castle. It is now hailed as one of the most popular tourist spots in Germany.

Italy is one of the most popular places to visit in the world . It's a favorite of millions of tourists worldwide. And who can blame them ? Nobody can resist the charms of Italy's culture and  architecture. This boot-shaped country was , after all, the home of the Legendary Romans and the Heroes of the Renaissance. Indeed, if you're going to go to Italy, be prepared to have your breath taken away by the sheer beauty of the place.
                               The coliseum

No other civilization in the world could top the Romans in terms of strength and power , and indeed, the Romans practically conquered the world. And for their entertainment,  the Romans had the world. They had the Coliseum where the prizes of their conquests , lions and other exotic animals were made the battle with the gladiators. Indeed, if you stand within the walls of the gigantic complex, you can almost feel the spirit of celebration that once rang through the place.

Piazza Campidoglio

The Piazza Campidoglio, or the Capitoline Hill, was the seat of power of the Ancient Romans. And up until today, it still stands as Italy's center of politics. It holds the famous statue of Castor and Pollux and various structures designed by the great Michaelangelo himself like the double staircase and other buildings.

Also, there's nothing more exhilarating than to visit the place where democracy was born. The Roman Forums, where the Roman senate once held their heated debates discussing everything from large-scale wars to petty squabbles, are also popular tourist attractions.
